On Friday 28th October WQE Active and Regent Active hosted a 'This Girl Can' Event at Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College in Leicester City, supporting the Sport England Campaign aiming to raise awareness of sport and physical activity to females.
The event saw inactive females receive a personal invitation to attend the event whereby they would get the opportunity to try some new and exciting activities! These included: UV Ping pong, Soca Dance, Netball, Archery, Pilates, Yoga and Clubbercise!
In addition to the female students taking on some of the new activites, they were given the opportunity to rub shoulders with the Leicester Riders WBBL professional athletes, in addition to the Leicester City Ladies squad. The event was also supported by a range of National Governing Bodies such as Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket, and the Leicester Guide Dog Association who brought along some four legged friends to promote alternative physical activity such as dog walking!
More than 50 students took part in the event and afterwards, college Sport Maker, Ashlea Smith said: "The event aimed to engage with those females who don't enjoy the idea of sport or being active, and showing them alternative ways to enjoy staying healthy with friends and breaking down the competitive stereotype to allow them to enjoy being active! I think overall the girls loved the event, and it was important for them to try the activities, and I believe that this will be key in planting the seed when trying to engage with them on a more regular basis with the WQE active programme offer which runs throughout the academic year."
Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport are hosting our very own This Girl Can event on 25th November. Held at Coalville's King Edward VII College, the Charity Night Out will follow up last year's hugely successful night, with a range of activities available to try out.
